Below is brief explanation on what’s going on with Google’s algorithms and how this is affecting how the search engine operates. It is important to understand the algorithms to see how this affects backlinks and link building.
Speaking to many web designers, there is much confusion about Google’s algorithms as there are many updates and changes as of recent. You may have heard of Page Rank, the Penguin algorithm and most recently Hummingbird.
Hummingbird is the latest algorithm with the purpose of making longer descriptive searches more effective and accurate.
Hummingbird has absolutely no effect on Page Rank or Penguin and in such has nothing to do with backlinks.
Page Rank is Google's core function and makes it different and more effective than any other search engine around. It uses the amount and quality of links pointing to any site and ranks websites in order with sites having the most quality web links topping the search engine for their respective keyword seaches. The Page Rank number is never entirely accurate as backlinks change all the time and Page Rank number shown on the Google toolbar is only ever updated a few times a year. However it is still a good indicator of the quality of a website. However there are other factors such as domain / page authority, which many believe to be more accurate nowadays.
Then there is Penguin, which was brought in to control backlinks and the amount of people trying to manipulate the system. This is Google’s way of controlling Page Rank so the quality sites that get genuine backlinks get better search results, rather than those who merely get backlinks to increase their Page Rank.
Penguin works in a number of ways. It seeks out those backlinks from poor quality websites with low Page Rank and authority. It looks for websites with thousands of outgoing links and low amount of poorly written content, and most importantly it seeks out backlinks that have no relevance to the website it is linked too.
So what is the difference between backlinks, unnatural backlinks and paid advertisements?
An advertisement is a common form of paid link that occurs between many websites and quite often between extremely high profile businesses. So of course Google is certainly not going to penalise this kind of link as I am sure Sky Sports or Facebook would be pretty annoyed if this was the case.
In short Google will use Penguin to check if the link is genuinely helpful and direct visitors to related and to a quality website, with the purpose of that site to gain not only traffic, but also interested visitors, rather than just merely for link juice to try and increase Page Rank.
The point is never try and increase your Page Rank, instead create good quality and solid backlinks (which could be a one way link, link exchange or paid advertisement) that will actually help increase genuine traffic to your site.
As soon as you follow us you will be added to the members list in Twitter. This list feeds directly onto the homepage of the directory. We will also retweet for you once a day providing you add @ProDesignDIR into your tweet. This is a free extra service and therefore we are under no obligation to retweet and will not do so if we feel the tweet could cause offence and damage the reputation of the directory. There also be the odd day within the year, such as holidays were we may not have the chance to retweet. However we should be able to provide this service the vast majority of the time.
We have only just started using Twitter, but have already reached over 600 followers, which are a mixture of the design related industry, which should be used to help promote natural backlinks, individuals and companies giving our members a chance to reach out to potential clients.
